Synopsis

This is a story of a primadonna Mak Yong performer who lives for her art. As an artist, she is disappointed in her own children who do not want to carry on her legacy and is under pressure from society who feel that Mak Yong is archaic, immoral and against religious teachings.

APR 16 – 22 GOLDILOCKS & THE 3 BEARS & THE GINGER BREADMAN (TAS)

Synopsis

The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat presents Children’s Theatre Goldilocks & The 3 Bears and The Gingerbread Man. In the last Children’s Theatre presentation, Sham Sunder Binwani brought magic with 2 also very well loves tales : Little Red Riding Hood & Jack and the Beanstalk, were well received by the younger audience of children between the ages of 3 – 6, as well as teachers and parents.

Staged between September 26 -31, 2011, more than 800 youngsters got a firsthand experience of not only watching a stage production but also the experience of a professional production created especially for the younger aged audience.

Come experience fun filled interactive theatre where these well loved tales are brought to life with animation & excitement!

Synopsis

2 brothers; Kim and Yen (Douglas Wong and Roax Tan) inherit their father’s Chinese paraphernalia shop. Yen maintains the shop like how his father used to, while Kim returns once a year for his father’s death anniversary prayers. One night, after the final prayers, as Kim prepares to leave for the city, they encounter a lost girl outside the shop. Too late to bring to the police, and unsure of her background, the brothers decide to shelter the girl for the night. As they decide on what to feed the brown skinned girl, and what to do to her the next morning; the brothers realize they are lost in many ways themselves, and discover that the answers to the questions in their hearts are found in the paper house that their father has left them.

APR 23 – 28 BUTOH FESTIVAL (TAS)

Synopsis

Foolish,Ridiculous, Mystery, and Sacred – This is Butoh

This is a reformation of social and culture, a unique behaviour performance, which created by the Japanese as a result of searching the meaning of humanity after the World War II. This uncompromising performance method and concept have deeply influenced many artists around the world.

50 years later, Butoh dance has emerged in many features in different areas due to the changes in humanities and other necessary factors. In this year, Nyoba Kan International Butoh Festival has invited the artists from East Europe and America for the very first time, and it is strongly supported by the Butoh Master, Yukio Waguri, who is also participating the event. Waguri san is the main disciple of the Ankoku Butoh founder Hijiakata Tatsumi (19281986), who is also the rare Butoh master of second generation.

The presentation of the Butoh Festival enables the people to observe the phenomenon of Butoh around the world. The series of workshops are a rare opportunity to experience the different Butoh techniques. Let the Butoh touches our senses, and unfold the unknown condition of freedom.

Synopsis

Flower and Sword, directed by Kimmy Kiew, is an adaptation from Taiwanese playwright Ma Sen. It is one of his popular plays and tells the story of a young person’s desperate attempt to free himself from the voice that has been haunting him all through his adult life. The young person returns to his homeland to find answers at his father’s grave. “It is the dramatization of a painful attempt to deal with the history of one’s origins”. Featuring multi-talented Lee Swee Keong and new talent Angel Chang. Installation art by Swing Chong and lighting designed by Sandee Chew.

Synopsis

The girl was described in her year book as just nice. NICE. She was horrified. This was the way others viewed her and it hurt her deeply, but she had to agree her life was bland and boring and she was a bit of a geek. She had lived her life in the shadow of her parents, who although loving had mapped out her life at birth and so far she had complied.

But life was changing. Off to Uni! Was this opportunity for a new and more exciting life, one should only dream about. Living out of home surrounded by new and interesting people.

Could this geek really become a swan or was she doomed to the life her parents had planned? She had to be bold. She had to be brave she had to pay the rent. She had to do something totally outrageous. But what……?

She finds herself, spreads her wings and stretches her vocal chords…at a bar of course!!!!

A musical revue like no other, with great musical numbers from ‘Wicked’, ‘Singing in the Rain’, ‘Die Fledermaus’, ‘Spring Awakening’, ‘Glee’ and so much more.
